You have a Kathmandu price list in one hand and a Chinese factory quote in the other, and they are not in the same unit. On 28 September 2026 a Kathmandu online hardware store sold Nepatop PN20 PP-R pipe at NRs 295 for a 3 m length of 20 mm and NRs 8,132 for 110 mm, tax included. Imported pipe under HS 3917.22.00 pays 30% customs duty, 5% excise and 13% VAT, 54.25% combined, in Nepal’s 2083/84 tariff.

Divide the shelf price per metre by 1.54245 and you have the most a container may be worth per metre at the customs line before freight, clearing or margin. For 20 mm PN20 that is US$0.42 per metre; for 110 mm, US$11.44 per metre.

Key Takeaways

  • Kathmandu shelf, 28 September 2026: Nepatop PN20 PP-R at NRs 295 for a 3 m length of 20 mm and NRs 8,132 for 110 mm, tax included.
  • HS 3917.22.00 pays 30% customs duty, 5% excise and 13% VAT, 54.25% combined, in the 2083/84 tariff. Fittings under 3917.40.00 pay the same.
  • The SAARC duty column is also 30%, so Indian-origin pipe gets no duty edge on this line.
  • Shelf-implied ceiling at NPR 153.61 per US dollar: US$0.42 per metre for 20 mm PN20 and US$11.44 per metre for 110 mm, before freight, clearing and margin.
  • MOQ is 1 FCL, with LCL possible at a higher per-metre cost. Lead time is 15-25 days production for one container, before ocean transit.

Kathmandu Shelf Prices in September 2026, per Length and per Metre

The benchmark below is one retailer, one brand and one date: the Hamro Nirman online store’s listing of Nepatop PP-R on 28 September 2026. Prices are the sale prices that day, tax included and shipping excluded. The listing showed discounts of 5-10% off list price that day, a sign the shelf price carries retail margin.

Two traps sit in this table. The first is length. This listing sells 3 m lengths, while a 2022 Nepal price blog quoted Nepatop 20 mm at Rs 350-450 per 4 m length. A factory quote may use 4 m. Convert every line to NRs per metre before you compare anything, or a bar that is a quarter shorter reads as a lower price.

Illustration. Bars on a rack look alike, but the Kathmandu listing prices 3 m lengths while a 2022 Nepal price blog quoted 4 m. Divide by the bar length first: NRs 295 for 3 m of 20 mm PN20 is NRs 98.33 per metre.

The second is the pressure class. At 32 mm the PN16 line costs more than the PN20 line on the same page, which is a retail pricing quirk and a reminder to price by the class you need, not by the cheapest line. If the listing is to be your benchmark, see what our PPR Global Series product list and catalogue covers before you ask for a quote.

What Nepal’s 2083/84 Tariff Adds to Imported PP-R Pipe

Nepal’s Department of Customs publishes one integrated tariff book for 2083/84, issued under the Finance Act 2083 and the Customs Act 2081. PP-R pipe sits under HS 3917.22.00, rigid tubes and pipes of polymers of propylene. The fittings you ship with it sit under 3917.40.00. Both rows carry the same four figures.

The published combined rate is 54.25%, and 1.30 × 1.05 × 1.13 = 1.54245 reproduces it, which is what you get when each levy is charged on a base that includes the one before. Confirm the valuation base with your agent. The tariff book states that the section 17 customs service fee is not in it, so ask your clearing agent for that fee and for which freight legs go into the customs value.

One column matters for sourcing. Goods from SAARC countries under SAFTA, with a certificate of origin, pay 30% on this line, the same as goods from anywhere else. The combined rate reads 54.25% for India-origin, Tibet-origin and other-origin pipe alike. Whatever an Indian mill saves you on HS 3917.22.00, it saves on freight or price, not on duty.

The Shelf-Implied Ceiling: What a Container Must Beat per Metre

A shelf price already carries every tax. So the shelf price per metre divided by 1.54245 is the customs value per metre at which importing would only break even, with zero freight to the shop, zero clearing and zero margin for you or the retailer. For 20 mm PN20, NRs 98.33 per metre divided by 1.54245 is NRs 63.75 per metre. The table converts that to US dollars at the Nepal Rastra Bank selling rate of NPR 153.61 per US dollar on 28 September 2026.

The division is the same whether or not you are VAT-registered: the shelf price with VAT over 1.54245 equals the shelf price without VAT over 1.365. What the ceiling does not contain is everything between the factory gate and the shop. FOB price, ocean freight to an Indian port, transit to a Nepal dry port, the service fee, clearing, inland haul, your margin and your retailer’s margin all have to fit under it.

Treat the ceiling as a rough, conservative proxy: it divides the whole shelf price by 1.54245, while freight, fees and margins that sit outside the customs value do not all carry the 54.25%, depending on which legs your agent includes. Use it by subtraction. Take the supplier’s FOB per metre for a size, subtract it from that size’s ceiling, and what is left per metre has to pay the sea leg, the transit, the service fee, clearing, inland haul and two margins. If the remainder is thin on the sizes you sell most, a container does not beat the shelf for those sizes, whatever the headline price looks like.

Test any quote this way before you ask for a sample. You need three numbers from the supplier and one from your forwarder: FOB per metre by size and PN class, the length per bar, the metres per 40HQ, and the door-to-dry-port freight for that container.

For Nepal importers and dealers buying by the container: send your size list and PN class for a per-metre FOB quote.

Match the Pipe First: What We Check and What to Ask

A cheaper metre of thinner pipe is not a saving. PN20 is SDR 6, and in our range the PN20 wall is 3.4 mm at DN20, 4.2 mm at DN25, 5.4 mm at DN32, 10.5 mm at DN63 and 18.4 mm at DN110. Ask every supplier for the wall per size in the same format and reject a quote that gives only the class. Our Serie Global PPR range runs DN20-DN160 across PN10 (SDR11), PN16 (SDR7.4), PN20 (SDR6) and PN25 (SDR5); the pressure class guide shows which class a hot-water line needs.

Quote in millimetres, never in inches. A Kathmandu shopper asking for 1 inch may mean 25 mm or 32 mm, because two inch conventions are in use, and the PP-R size chart shows both. A price list that says 1 inch without a millimetre figure is not comparable.

On standards, the same retail listing marks two SDR 7.4 lines ‘NS 552’. We could not find NS 552 in the Nepal Standards list published by NBSM, which ends at NS 541:2073, so we make no claim about what it covers. Before you land a container, ask NBSM whether a Nepal Standard or NS mark applies to PP-R pipe for your buyers.

What we check

OD and wall are checked to ISO 15874 and DIN 8077. The caliper wall check is sampled across several pallets, not only the top layer. Printed markings are reconciled to certificate numbers. Ask any supplier, us included, for the same three records, and for sample lengths from the production lot rather than from a showroom.

Illustration. Two pipes of similar outside diameter can carry very different walls, and a price line shows neither. In our range the PN20 wall is 3.4 mm at DN20 and 18.4 mm at DN110; ask every supplier for OD and wall per size in the same format.

Route, MOQ and Lead Time for a First Container to Nepal

Nepal’s overseas trade is routed mainly through the Indian ports of Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam. Rail cargo long ran only to the Birgunj ICP; a Kolkata-Biratnagar rail cargo service began on 18 July 2026, which gives an eastern Nepal dealer a second dry port to price. Ask your forwarder for door-to-dry-port freight and days on both, for the same container type.

Our MOQ is 1 FCL, with LCL possible at a higher per-metre cost. A 40HQ holds about 76 m³ against about 33 m³ for a 20ft, and PP-R fills the space before it reaches the weight limit, so ask every supplier for metres per 40HQ by size mix. That figure turns a container freight quote into the per-metre number the ceiling needs.

Illustration. PP-R fills a container before it reaches the weight limit, and a 40HQ holds about 76 m³. Metres per 40HQ for your size mix is the figure that turns a container freight quote into a per-metre cost you can hold against the ceiling.

Lead time is 15-25 days production for one container, before ocean transit. Add the sea leg to your chosen Indian port, the transit to Birgunj or Biratnagar, and clearing, and take each from the forwarder in writing rather than from a blog. Payment is 30% deposit and 70% before shipment. Resin is 70-85% of manufacturing cost and has traded at US$780-1,150 per ton, so ask how long a quote stays valid.

For Nepal dealers planning a first 40HQ: get per-metre FOB and metres per container for your size mix.

Conclusión

Before you email any supplier, put four things in the message: sizes in millimetres, PN class, bar length, and the Nepal dry port you will clear at. Then test the reply against the ceiling table, with the forwarder’s number included.

For the container side of that email, our first-container plan covers how to split a 40HQ across sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the price of a 1 inch PPR pipe in Nepal?

It depends which size ‘1 inch’ means. On 28 September 2026, Nepatop PN20 cost NRs 465 for a 3 m length of 25 mm and NRs 749 for 32 mm, tax included, at a Kathmandu online store. Ask for the size in millimetres.

How much is customs duty on PPR pipe in Nepal?

HS 3917.22.00 pays 30% customs duty, 5% excise and 13% VAT, 54.25% combined, in Nepal’s 2083/84 tariff. The customs service fee under section 17 of the Customs Act 2081 is extra.

Is PPR pipe from India cheaper to import into Nepal?

Not on duty. The SAARC column for HS 3917.22.00 is 30%, the same as other countries, and the combined rate is 54.25% for India-origin pipe too. Any saving has to come from freight or the ex-works price.

Which port do Nepal importers use for pipe from China?

Nepal’s overseas trade runs mainly through Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam, with rail to the Birgunj ICP and, since 18 July 2026, to Biratnagar. Price both dry ports with your forwarder.
